Hosting, something has got to give.

It's a buyers market. So many hosters so few clients. This business is crazy, I'm sure lots of the hosting companies with low profiles have given up. Their sites are still there, hoping to catch some unsuspecting fish swimming by. Even at the top of the food chain there are so few leads. You get to the top of the page rankings and still very few hits.  Something has got to give. If you are looking to host or switch hosting there are some great deals out there. The best thing to look for is contactability, always a good sign that the hosting company is thinking about you wanting to renew your hosting when the time comes. It's so difficult to find new customers but easy to keep the ones you have. Just keep letting them know you are there to help and then help them.

Unlimited hosting, it's no big deal.

There are a lot of people getting hot under the collar about unlimited hosting. We sell unlimited hosting, but to be honest the unlimited aspect does not make the hosting any better. All we are saying to we are not going to put any limits on how big you make your website, you will do that yourself, we are not going to limit the bandwidth towards the end of the month because your site site has been particularly busy. Good luck in finding enough visitors!  If you put huge files on your site your visitors are going to be put off by having to wait for them to load It's things like that that set the limits, your visitors. The reason why I decided to set everything to unlimited was because it makes things easy to remember! Not having to have different deals with different specifications set everything to unlimited and sell 1 year, 2 year and 5 year deals. Easy. Unlimited is not going to make anything faster or better in anyway. You just know that there is always more available if required.

Spammer, me!

So we all have a twitter account I use my one to search for people asking for "hosting recommendations" there are loads of tweets offering "hosting recommendation" I search for people asking for them. Like this one " UK Geeks: I need fast, shared UK hosting, eg. like Dreamhost but local. ANY RECOMMENDATIONS? don't want my own server (& hate Pleask!).
I highlighted the any recommendation because that looked like an invitation to me. So I made a recommendation as INVITED.
Reply 1 ended  "Sadly you are a spammer. So No"
A spammer is someone who sends emails etc. (thousands of them) unsolicited.
Reply 2 started "How not to do corporate social media" she wanted the final word, twice!
You solicted a response and got one.
I assume she looked at my twitter page and saw my tweets, all much the same. 5 a day I would say to people asking for hosting recommendations. Spammer, hardly. I don't think she wanted any hosting. A funny thing happened on the way to the shops.

I heard there was I new restaurant in town. So as I was walking past I popped in. It looks nice, very cosy, I noticed they had a web site, I asked for a card,  they didn't have one!! Okay write it down on some paper. That was when the owner appeared. "Good Luck with your new venture" I said.  "I see you are sorted with a website" "Yes it's nearly up." he replied. "How about google" my next question "page ranking which page are you on." ..  " yeah page 1 top of the page",  well that's possible I heard this place was opening a few months ago, get the site going asap, straight onto the seo and by opening day you may have got yourself a running jump. Start your mailing list from day one. (If you know what you doing.)
Then he said the fatal words "My friends doing it, he does the forensics"  that's what they do after a crime. I vaguely knew the guy but he didn't like the fact that I was selling. He thought I was just another web designer on the make. I've done web design ( I'm crap) SEO that's a different matter. Got home and looked at his site. Nice Page with (site coming soon notice). Looked at the keywords (lime tree kitchen lewes, east sussex, bistro , restaurant !!) oh dear,  did a google search (No trace) did a backlink check (1 backlink) yes forensics was the right word.
Sorry mate I'm on page1 no3 in the non paying area of Google...  me against hundreds of hosting companies.... Never do important business with friends or family you never have full control.. and you just wasted 3 months of the SEO time.. never mind here's 100 free links. With some keywords people might search for Where to eat in Lewes
I meant it when I said  "Good Luck with your new venture." however there is more to running a business than having good luck! Having honest and open conversations with people is part of it too. Mister "top of the page on Google" because it would be so difficult to find out if that was true or not.......

I should have made a "before" image to show you. It would have shown you about 5 different version of linktext. Having access to those links I changed them to "unlimited web hosting" to give this cleaning more ordered image. I will leave with the image and you will quickly draw information from it. The blank boxes are due to people moving links on their sites, sure the links are there somewhere on  their site but the linktext is gone! So I tracked them down and altered the link for a direct hit. That won't show up on the checker for sometime I guess.
